Position Summary

The Cargo Receiver is responsible to provide strong teamwork to the Cargo Operations department, working closely with cargo and ramp staff. The Cargo Receiver is responsible to complete cargo duties as assigned.

The Cargo Receiver is a member of the overall Winnipeg (YWG) and Thompson (YTH), MB cargo operations team.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Assisting customers with bringing freight into the warehouse.
  • Weighing and counting shipments as they are received.
  • Writing up the air waybills and reviewing the air waybill/shipping declaration with the customer.
  • Blocking seats for walk-in customers by calling the call centre.
  • Processing payments.
  • Filing air waybills and corresponding paperwork.
  • Monitoring freight weights and dimensions as freight is being written up.
  • Screening all cargo tendered to them for transport for the presence of prohibited items such as undeclared Dangerous Goods, illegal contraband, and sabotage devices.
  • Documenting all cargo screening conducted in accordance with document retention procedures.
  • Proficient in the methods of cargo screening applicable to their location and appropriate for the screening scenario.
  • Effectively resolving customer complaints by identifying possible options and/or solutions.
  • Ensuring that all Dangerous Goods are declared, reviewing the Dangerous Goods checklist with the customer and having the customer sign the checklist.
  • Ensuring that the shipper is providing all necessary paperwork needed according to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act.
  • Providing positive teamwork and ongoing support to Cargo Management, Cargo Supervisors, the Cargo Operations Coordinator, Claims Agent, Loadmasters and Aircraft Load Coordinator.
  • Ensuring that charter freight is weighed and stickered properly and an email is sent to Charters and Cargo with the AWB number and weight.
  • Scanning/inspecting/stickering freight as necessary.
  • Shrink-wrapping loose pallets as necessary.
  • Storing freight in the appropriate location in the warehouse; by destination, fridge, freezer, DG or medical cooler.
  • Quoting customers with rates for shipments of freight.
  • Monitoring and responding in a timely fashion to Cargo emails regarding freight from both customers and the call centre.
  • Keeping the warehouse neat, clean and organized.
  • Verifying inbound freight manifests.
  • Verifying and entering inbound freight and calling customers for freight pick up.
  • Entering manual southbound AWBs.
  • Doing the necessary customer call-outs to have freight picked up and adding the date called to the remarks of the airway bill.
  • Keeping the southbound sections organized and clean per airport of origin.
  • Organizing the envelopes in the wall slots per airport of origin and/or per department/business.
  • Internal mail and Stores department shipment distribution.
  • Keeping the North/South Bound Dangerous Goods paperwork stapled together and filing as required by Transport Canada regulations.
  • Keeping track of dangerous goods/cargo receiving supplies and if an order needs to be placed; stickers, pilot notification forms, checklists, labels, shrink wrap, boxes, tape etc.
  • Assisting the Cargo Operations Coordinator and Claims Agent with finding missing freight.
  • Preventing unauthorized access to secure cargo in storage and in the transport stream.
  • Knowledgeable in the Cargo Security Reporting Procedure as applicable to their Air Cargo Security role.
  • Required to be trained on an annual basis.
  • Assisting the Ramp staff with loading planes upon request.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Manager.

Education and Experience

  • Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Proficient knowledge of Amelia computer system.
  • Effective listening and communication skills.
  • Customer service experience an asset.
  • Airline experience considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a WAA RAIC pass and an AVOP.
  • Forklift license or complete applicable training.
  • Cultural Diversity training considered an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors; employee must be able to adapt to all outdoor weather conditions.
  • Various shifts and at a fast pace in order to meet service level requirements of the airline.
  • In good general health and the ability to lift and bend, carrying loads of up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to carry and operate a radio.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Safety equipment when & where required e.g. hearing protection, safety vest, protective footwear, and applicable passes.
